What is Hypnotherapy | Does it Work?

What is Hypnotherapy and How Does it Work?

When you think of hypnotherapy, you instantly imagine someone waving his watch in front of another person to control his mind don’t you?

It can be also seen in some movies, used as a tactic against enemies.
However, that’s not the case in reality. Nobody can use hypnosis to make you do something you are not willing to do by yourself.

Hypnosis isn’t what most people think it is.

So, if someone says that they can make you do anything thanks to the hypnotherapy, tell them to hypnotise you to rob a bank. They won’t succeed of course.
What Is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is using hypnosis as a part of the therapeutic technique.
It still is pretty similar to the ones they do in movies, as the Hypnotherapist will calm you down with his words, and put you in the state of relaxation which isn’t deep sleep as people may think. It is more of an induction of a condition.
The point of the hypnosis is to suppress the conscious mind and to reveal subconscious mind.
When the subconscious mind is revealed, a therapist is able to suggest ideas and changes in a lifestyle as they’re all seeds of our subconscious mind.

When And How Did Hypnotherapy Begin?

It’s really hard to tell when did hypnosis begin because of many contradictions. All we know is that hypnosis has been there since the dawn of time and has been experienced by all human beings.

You don’t lose control with Hypnotherapy

However, there are some things we know for sure. Hypnotherapy didn’t change even a bit for millennia. Although, in the last decades we have started realising it and understanding the ability of hypnosis and how to control it more than ever before.
While there are still people who connect hypnosis, or a hypnotherapist with occult stuff and believe that the hypnotherapist can create miracles or control minds, which isn’t true in reality. Their disbeliefs are restraining them from really getting to know hypnosis.
On the other hand, the work of the Franz Mesmer and others in the 18th Century is considered as the turn around for hypnotherapy since it began to be used with more of a scientific viewpoint.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

As I have mentioned earlier, it all starts by a hypnotherapist who calms you down and puts you down in a state of relaxation. State of an induction condition where the subconscious mind is revealed while your conscious is suppressed.
When a person is in a state of relaxation or induction of condition, their breathing becomes slower and deeper, but also the pulse and metabolic rates fall.
Once the subconscious mind is revealed, a hypnotherapist will be able to suggest the ideas and concepts of lifestyle changes which might affect people’s mind.
We all have habits, good habits and not so good ones. They’re all stored in our subconscious mind, and hypnosis helps us to change those habits for better ones. People are able to change their lifestyle decisions and habits thanks to the hypnotherapy.
That’s why hypnotherapy is kind of a part of psychology since it’s promoting positive personal development and healing.

What Is The Hypnotherapy Used For?
Hypnotherapy is a tool which can help change people’s lifestyle decisions, bad habits but also fears or phobias.
We all have some kind of fears. Whether it is a fear of a snake or fear of heights, it’s suppressed in our subconscious mind. People can’t change their fears easily because the conscious mind isn’t ready to make the changes while subconscious mind retains the fear and prevents us from changing it.
What problems can hypnotherapy treat?
Hypnosis is applied to psychological, physical and emotional disorders. Thanks to the hypnotherapy, people are able to change many things from their subconscious mind. From simply changing bad habits for the better ones to relieving pain during surgeries.
Problems hypnotherapist can treat:
Change habit of smoking
Change habit of drinking
Relieve pain in surgery or dentistry
Reduce the need for painkillers
Ease the suffering of the disabled
The list could go on, and there are definitely many situations to approach human’s mind and change unwanted behavior.
As people’s mind is complex, so is the psychology. People will be able to change anything unwanted from their subconscious memory.
But everything we are able to deal with, thanks to the hypnotherapy, is incredibly impressive.
Things You Should Know Before Getting a Hypnosis Treatment
You should know that the hypnotherapist uses it for the purpose of healing and personal development.

It might change your bad habits, fears, phobias, negative thoughts or even suppressed emotions by changing the behavior of your subconscious mind.
But remember that hypnotherapy can not make you do something you wouldn’t want to do in a conscious situation.
One of the biggest misunderstandings is that the hypnosis puts you in a deep sleep, which isn’t true at all. Hypnotherapy doesn’t put you in a deep sleep, yet trance-like condition in which your body is relaxed and your subconscious mind is revealed.
Hypnosis can’t make you do something you don’t want to. In a hypnotherapy, you are in control and you can’t be made to do anything.
If you are planning to go for a hypnotherapy treatment, I would recommend you to read a book from Dr. Hillary Jones called “Doctor, What’s The Alternative?” in which she provides accurate description of hypnotherapy, how it works and how you can use it to your advantage to help you grow and change.

Hypnotherapy can be life changing.

Also, hypnotherapy isn’t dangerous as long as it is done by a licensed therapist who knows what’s he doing. Otherwise, complications might occur.
It’s important to keep your mind open when it comes to hypnotherapy.
Also, a lot of research should get you on the right track. While there are many people who don’t believe in hypnotherapy or they think it’s some kind of voodoo magic, there are still many people who benefit from hypnosis.
A great idea would be if you could talk to a therapist first before you decide for yourself, or if you know someone who has done it before so they can tell you their experience.
